The Riddle of the Image tries to see works of art as if through the eyes of those who made them and those who commissioned them. It starts with a pigment (for those who have not read The Alchemy of Paint) before considering some manuscript illuminations and altarpieces. It looks at how a single theme (the relationship between heaven and earth), is expressed in the use of materials in each of the works. It moves from the formal and exoteric, through the deeply personal, to the mystical and esoteric.
